Which Video Game Console is the Best?

A video game console like the Wii, Xbox or PS3 is a major purchase. You can easily drop a few hundred dollars on the console, game and extra controller. Many people struggle with the decision of which game console to buy.

Hold on a second…I’m just slipping into my form-fitting superhero costume because I’m about to come to the rescue.

It’s a bit hard to breathe with these spandex tights on, but I can still manage to type. So on with the show!

In this post, we’ll have a look at all three consoles and compare them. I’ve owned all three and while I have a favorite, all three have something to offer, depending on your gaming needs.

The Wii

The Wii is my least favorite video game console.

However, it’s great for children and there are a few games that adults can enjoy. For example, lots of adults (including myself) like Wii Fit and Zelda. Kids go absolutely ape-shit over the Wii. It’s not as powerful a gaming system as either the PS3 or Xbox but it gets the job done.

The Wii has a few other selling points. Some people really enjoy the controllers. One of the selling points that Wii likes to promote is that the controllers make you ‘get off the couch’ and get active. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a gimmick. Sure, you will have to get off the couch to play something like Wii Fit, but most of the games can be played sitting on the couch while waving your arms around.

You can stream Netflix through your Wii and you can buy the console plus a game on the cheap. In other words, if you have small children, like uncomplicated games and/or money is a concern, you will want to go with the Wii console. It’s still a great system, even though I’m not a huge fan.

But all that means is that it doesn’t suit my gaming needs. It might suit yours.

PS3

I’m a big fan of the PS3. Like its predecessor – The PS2 – it’s sturdy as hell. I’ve played it a lot and it’s never let me down. The PS3 has two main selling features in my opinion; it’s free to play online games and it comes with a built in Blue Ray player. It’s more expensive than the Wii and Xbox but the Blue Ray player makes it worth it, especially if you love watching movies.

PS3

I also like the PS3 controllers better than the Xbox or Wii controllers. I know that’s a personal thing, but there it is. I know a heck of a lot of people who like the Wii or Xbox controllers better.

Maybe I have small hands and am too lazy to swing away while playing?

To sum it all up, the PS3 is a great system with a lot to offer. It’s more expensive than the other two systems, which can be a huge factor when it comes to choosing a console. It comes with a Blue Ray player and it’s has free online play. Like the Wii, you can stream things like Netflix through the PS3 and you can also stream movies from your computer. It’s sturdy and stands up well under regular game-play.

It’s a pretty sexy gaming console.

Xbox 360

I used to play my PS3 the most…but slowly but surely, the Xbox 360 has begun to take over. I used to resist the pull of the Xbox because like I said above, I don’t like the controller as much and I absolutely hate the idea of paying for online gaming.

Small hands, lazy and now I’ve admitted that I’m a cheapskate. Not cool.

Xbox

I’ve also owned two Xbox consoles and my first one broke down three times. After that, I was pretty pissed. Granted, Xbox replaced my broken device but it still aggravated me. The second one that I bought is holding up well though. It streams movies from my computer and plays games seamlessly. So far, I’ve had no problems with it.

I mentioned that I didn’t like paying (ad nauseam?) for online gaming, but I have to admit that there is far less lag associated with online Xbox gaming compared to the PS3. I suppose that’s to be expected when one is a paid service and one is a free one. Like my mom always said, you get what you pay for.

So if you can do without a Blue Ray player and don’t mind paying $60 a year for the privilege of playing online, then the Xbox might be the console for you. It looks stylish, has lots of features and a funky looking controller.

However, if you decide to go with the Xbox, I’d advise you not to buy used. Go with the newer ones, since the older ones seem to overheat.

There’s my take. All three gaming consoles have something to offer. For right now, I give a very slight edge to the Xbox, although not by much and the PS3 is still near and dear to my heart. Also, if you want some specs, here’s a neat link to a site that compares the specs of all three systems.

If you like gaming, what’s your favorite gaming console?
